Each college has its own individuality – some even from the 13th century, while others are just a few decades old. Many colleges are closed to visitors, especially during exams. Oxford has a large railway station which is located in the western part of town, just left of center and south of the historic neighborhood Jericho. Trains to Oxford go to West London (Paddington and Eagling Broadway), Birmingham and Manchester. Oxford is known as the ‘city of the dreaming spires’ – a term first coined by poet Matthew Arnold in reference to the gentle spires and harmonious architecture of the city’s university buildings.
