how to learn seo?

I never expected that I could learn seo from a friend.  He hired me as his virtual assistant with a good pay.  I was really happy because I was studying at the same time in a University and I really need extra money to pay my tuition fee.  It was just a part time job but really cool one.  I have computer and internet connection at home so I only work in my own home.  It was just a simple task, I go to various blogs and put valuable comments there so that they visit back to the link or website that I posted.
