Many of the more easy to diagnose diseases affect goldfish skin, fins, and gills. No matter how careful you are about your goldfish care, even the most loved fish can come down with a skin disease. Ich is a very common goldfish disease and is easy to diagnose from the small white spots covering the body and fins. The entire tank needs to be treated. Start with a salt treatment and a thorough vacuuming of your gravel. If that has no effect, pick up an ich medication from your local pet store. Finrot is caused by bacteria that begin to eat away at fins. Fins will be ragged, split, or may even have streaks of red. Remove sick fish to a quarantine tank for salt treatment. If that has no effect, use a finrot medication. Velvet-infected fish usually have excess slime on their body, may scratch up against objects, and may have patches of light discoloration on their skin. Velvet infects the whole tank. Salt treatment is ineffective, instead treat with a formalin-based medication.
