When our children came of age to get their licenses and start driving, we laid down some ground rules so that they would know exactly what they would be getting into and what their responsibilities would be. I offered to help each one get a car when he or she had completed his driver’s education and passed the test to get a license. I also offered to put all three of them on my own car insurance policy to keep the costs down. Their responsibilities included paying for their own driver’s education, finding ways to pay their own share of the monthly premiums and avoiding any situation that would raise my rates, to include speeding tickets and reckless driving. I think I offered them a good deal.
